Description

This 4 inch Watts 909RPDA Reduced Pressure Detector Assembly Backflow Preventer protects potable water supplies from fire protection system substances. Designed for health hazard applications, it prevents backflow due to backsiphonage or backpressure. Its cast iron body features an ArmorTek® epoxy coating for superior corrosion resistance, including microbial-induced corrosion. Key components include OSY gate valves, replaceable stainless steel seats, and a GPM meter for leak detection. An integrated SentryPlus Alert® flood sensor provides notification of relief valve discharges when connected to an optional kit. With a maximum working pressure of 175 psi and UL Classified/FM Approved status, it offers reliable and compliant backflow protection.

Flood Sensor Connection

The integrated flood sensor with SentryPlus Alert® technology requires an add-on sensor connection kit (sold separately) for activation. This kit enables communication with Building Management Systems (BMS) and cellular networks to provide flood alerts.

Drain Line Connection

  • When installing a drain line for this backflow preventer, use Watts Series 909 air gaps.

Additional Details

This 4 inch reduced pressure detector backflow preventer assembly prevents the reverse flow of fire protection system substances from being pumped or siphoned into the potable water supply due to backsiphonage and or backpressure. It is ideal for protection in continuous pressure piping applications and at cross-connections identified as health hazards.

Construction & Design

  • Consists of an epoxy coated cast iron body, domestic OSY resilient seated gate valves, captured spring check valves, replaceable stainless steel seats, top mounted test cocks, and a pressure differential relief valve.
  • The coating on this backflow assembly uses ArmorTek®, a patented 3-part advanced epoxy coating system designed to limit both microbial induced (MIC) and exposed metal substrate corrosion.
  • Features a compact design for economy combined with performance.
  • Modular check design facilitates maintenance and assembly access.
  • No special tools required for maintenance.

Integrated Metering & Sensing

  • Includes a GPM (gallons per minute) meter to detect underground leaks and unauthorized water use.
  • Contains a flood sensor with SentryPlus Alert® technology to detect excessive water discharges from the relief valve.
  • When activated through an add-on sensor connection kit (sold separately), the flood sensor relays a signal that triggers notification of potential flooding to service personnel.
  • Flood alerts are compatible with Building Management Systems (BMS) and cellular network communication via the add-on sensor connection kit.

Performance

  • Provides maximum flow at low pressure drop.
  • Air-in/Water-out relief valve design provides maximum capacity during emergency conditions.
  • Operating temperature range: 33°F - 140°F (0.5°C ~ 60°C) continuous.
  • Maximum working pressure: 175 psi (12.1 bar).

Important Note: An add-on connection kit (sold separately) is required to activate the flood sensor. Without the connection kit, the sensor is a passive component that has no communication with any other device. The use of the flood sensor does not replace the need to comply with all required instructions, codes, and regulations related to installation, operation, and maintenance of this product, including the need to provide proper drainage in the event of a discharge.

FAQs

What is the primary function of the Watts 909RPDA backflow preventer?

The primary function is to prevent the reverse flow of fire protection system substances, such as glycerin or stagnant water, from entering the potable water supply due to backsiphonage or backpressure. It's designed for health hazard applications.

What is ArmorTek® coating and why is it important?

ArmorTek® is a patented three-part advanced epoxy coating system applied to the cast iron body. It is engineered to reduce microbial-induced corrosion (MIC) and protect exposed metal substrates, enhancing the longevity and reliability of the backflow preventer.

Does this backflow preventer include a flood sensor?

Yes, it includes a flood sensor with SentryPlus Alert® technology to detect excessive water discharges from the relief valve. An add-on connection kit (sold separately) is required to activate the sensor's notification features.

What certifications and approvals does this assembly have?

This Watts 909RPDA assembly meets AWWA C511-92, ASSE 1047, UL Classified, CSA B64, and USC Manual 8th Edition standards. It is also FM Approved.

What is the maximum operating pressure and temperature range?

The maximum continuous working pressure for this assembly is 175 psi (12.1 bar). It operates continuously within a temperature range of 33°F - 140°F (0.5°C - 60°C).
