Description

The 3 inch Watts Series 957 Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) backflow preventer safeguards potable water systems from contamination caused by backpressure or backsiphonage. Designed for health hazard applications, this assembly features a 304 stainless steel housing and domestic non-rising stem (NRS) shutoff valves. It includes an integrated flood sensor with SentryPlus Alert® technology to detect excessive relief valve discharges, helping prevent water damage. With a maximum working pressure of 175 psi and a temperature range of 33°F to 140°F, this compact unit is also approximately 70% lighter than conventional models. It is approved by AWWA, ASSE, CSA, and NSF.

Help Me Connect

Flood Sensor Connection and Alerts

  • The integrated flood sensor detects excessive water discharges from the relief valve.
  • To activate alert features and enable communication, an add-on sensor connection kit is required. Without this kit, the sensor operates passively without external communication.
  • Connection kit options include compatibility with Building Management Systems (BMS) and cellular communication networks.
  • The Sensor Control Monitor connection kit enables integration with Building Automation Systems (BAS) via RS-485 Modbus or the Nexa® platform using Wi-Fi connectivity.

Installation Orientation

  • This assembly is approved for horizontal N pattern installation. Ensure the backflow assembly is installed in accordance with the direction of the flow arrow for proper operation.

Additional Details

The 3 inch Watts Series 957 Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) backflow preventer protects potable water systems from contamination due to backpressure or backsiphonage, commonly found in health hazard applications. This compact and lightweight assembly features a flood sensor with SentryPlus Alert® technology to detect excessive relief valve discharges.

Features and Benefits

  • Provides protection against backpressure and backsiphonage contamination in potable water systems.
  • Features a flood sensor with SentryPlus Alert® technology to detect continuous discharge from the relief valve, helping prevent potential flooding and costly damage.
  • Designed with domestic non-rising stem (NRS) shutoff valves for reliable performance.
  • Extremely compact design, approximately 70% lighter than traditional RPZ assemblies.
  • Constructed with a 304 (Schedule 40) stainless steel housing and sleeve for durability.
  • Utilizes groove fittings for integral pipeline adjustment and ease of serviceability.
  • Patented torsion spring checks ensure lowest pressure loss.
  • Includes a corrosive resistant stainless steel bottom-mounted pressure relief valve.

Flood Sensor Functionality

  • The flood sensor on the relief valve monitors for excessive water discharges.
  • An add-on sensor connection kit is required to activate the flood sensor's alert features.
  • Without the connection kit, the sensor is a passive component without communication capabilities.
  • When activated, the sensor can relay alerts via BMS, cellular communication, or the Sensor Control Monitor for integration with BAS via RS-485 Modbus or the Nexa® platform through Wi-Fi.

Installation, operation, and maintenance must comply with all required instructions, codes, and regulations. Providing proper drainage for discharge is essential. Watts is not responsible for alert failures due to connectivity issues, power outages, or improper installation.

FAQs

What type of contamination does this backflow preventer protect against?

This Reduced Pressure Zone assembly protects against contamination in potable water systems from both backsiphonage and backpressure, commonly occurring in health hazard applications.

How does the flood sensor function?

The flood sensor on the relief valve detects excessive water discharges. To activate alert features and external communication, an add-on sensor connection kit is required. Without the kit, the sensor is passive.

What are the connectivity options for the flood sensor alerts?

When an add-on connection kit is used, the flood sensor can relay alerts through Building Management Systems (BMS), cellular communication, or the Sensor Control Monitor for integration with Building Automation Systems (BAS) via RS-485 Modbus or the Nexa® platform over Wi-Fi.

What materials are used in the construction of this backflow preventer?

The housing and sleeve are made of 304 (Schedule 40) stainless steel. Elastomers include EPDM, silicone, and Buna-N. Test cocks feature a Lead Free* bronze body, and the relief valve is corrosive resistant stainless steel.

What are the maximum operating pressure and temperature ratings?

This 3 inch Watts Series 957 backflow preventer has a maximum working pressure of 175 psi (12.1 bar) and an operating temperature range of 33°F to 140°F (0.5°C to 60°C).
